John-Dylan Haynes is a cognitive neuroscientist at the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He is founding Director of the Berlin Center for Advanced Neuroimaging, head of the Master program Mind and Brain at Humboldt Universität Berlin and ethics coordinator at the Excellence Cluster Science of Intelligence. His research has explored the potentials, limitations and ethics of so-called “brain reading”, i.e. the read-out and prediction of thoughts using advanced machine learning and AI techniques. He has also worked intensively on the neural mechanisms of consciousness, intentions and free will as well as on comparing human and machine intelligence. He has a long track record of interdisciplinary work with philosophers clarifying the conceptual foundations of these interdisciplinary research fields.

A key challenge for AI is to ensure that the behavior of artificial algorithms aligns with what humans want. The problem is that so many different people want so many different things, and paradoxically even individuals often don’t even know exactly what it is they want.
