Yale University

Gideon Yaffe is the Wesley Newcomb Hohfeld Professor of Jurisprudence and Professor of Philosophy and Psychology at Yale. His work concerns a variety of issues about the nature of criminal responsibility. He investigates this philosophically and through collaborative empirical projects with neuroscientists and psychologists. The nature of intention, and its role in responsible conduct, is a central object of study in his work.

Whether artificial agents are themselves responsible for harms they cause is a question that will be of increasing importance, as AI systems become more sophisticated. A crucial question that must be answered, then, concerns whether AI systems have intentions and how we can determine what their intentions are.
