Adina Roskies
UC Santa Barbara

Adina Roskies is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at University of California Santa Barbara, and chair of the university’s Cognitive Science Program. Dr. Roskies’ research interests lie at the intersection of philosophy and neuroscience, and include philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and ethics. She is known for her work on the philosophy and neuroscience of free will, on agency, and on the functional basis of volition and self-control. Current interests include applying knowledge from biological systems to artificial systems. Recent grants include awards from the NIH BRAIN Initiative studying the nature of agency and the ethics of neurointerventions and the Templeton and Fetzer Foundation grant on the neurophilosophy of free will.

As AI becomes more autonomous, we will need to better understand the nature of agency and various forms that intentions can take. Translational knowledge will be important for advances in AI, as well as prediction and control of these increasingly embedded autonomous systems.
